Week 8: Oct. 31 - Nov. 4
Goals (Continued from Last Week): 1. Design, conduct, present and analyze an independent experiment about reaction rates in groups. a. Design: show awareness of controlling variables and collecting enough of the right kind of data. Explain a reasonable hypotheisis. b. Conduct: avoid letting carelessness or errors ruin your data. c. Present: Organize your clearly data in tables and transform it with calculations or graphs to highlight results. d. Analyze: Write a conclusion that is based on your data and answers your focus question.
Weekly Plans Monday: Last class day for collecting data. Addtional data collection should be done during tutorial or after school. Most students work on writing a procedure or making their graph. Link to handouts. Homework: Finish procedure and graph. Block day: Proofread procedure. Work on Conclusion. Homework: Finish Conclusion Friday: Finish all unfinished sections and turn in work sample.

Weeks 5 and 6 Oct. 10 - 21
Goals: 1. Know and be able to apply the vocabulary: variable, independent variable, dependent variable, controlled variable. 2. Understand what happens to the molecules of a substance as its temperature increases. 3. Be able to compare the speeds (rates) of a reaction through using graphs. 4. Know how temperature affects the speed (rate) of a reaction, and be able to explain this effect with particles.
Activities: Mon :(10/10) Counselor visitations Block : Reaction Rate Experiment Link to handout, Variables Worksheet Link to handoutHomework: Finish Graphs of Results Thursday : Discuss experiment results and finish worksheets. Monday (10/17) : Discussion about temperature's affect on particle motion, Notes. Block : Repeat Reaction Rate Experiment with computer pressure sensors. Thursday : Discuss Experiment Results, graph and write conclusion for experiment Friday : Review, catch up, quiz.

This site will allow you to see what is happening in Mr. Medley's Academy Science class. I will post weekly goals and activities and make handouts available.
I have a degree in physics from Rice University and I have been teaching since 1994. This is my tenth year at Grant.
I take educating students very seriously and am honored to have you or your child in my class.
