Continued from last week

Because I ws out of town, there was no quiz and I did not collect notebooks last Friday.

Activities
Monday: Go over last week's work. Review.

  Week 13 Dec. 4 -8
There will be a big unit test Thursday Dec. 14

Goals:
1. Be able to classify samples of matter as either pure substance, heterogeneous mixture or homogeneous mixture.
2. Be able to describe on a molecular level what is happening during dissolving and in a solution.
3. Properly use the terms solute, solvent, solution and concentration.
4. Be able to describe several methods for separating mixtures, including filtering and distilling.
5. Be able to interpret solubility curves and know general trends in how the solubility of solids and gases vary with temperature

We will continue to work toward a fuller understanding of these goals next week too.

Activities
Monday: Review phase changes. Quiz. Turn in notebooks. Go over background information for the distillation lab
Block day: Lab - distilling alcohol
Thursday: Go over lab results. Some work time on lab. Start solubility curve worksheets.
Friday: Finish solubility curve worksheets. Film: Elements, Compounds and Mixtures. Review and quiz.

I will be gone Thursday and Friday to present at a conference.
Thanks to everyone that helped with our field trip. Things went very smoothly and we think the students had a nice exposure to college.

Notebook contents
1. Distillation of a Mixture: Alcohol and Water - worksheet and graph
2. Solubility Curve Worksheet
3. Creating your own Solubility Curve Worksheet
4. Film Notes: Elements, Compounds and Mixtures

This site will allow you to see what is happening in Mr. Medley's Academy Science class. I will post weekly goals and activities and make handouts available.
